Secrets
Architectural accents or ‘gingerbread’ as they are often referred to, have been around
for decades. The secret to their longevity is the material they are made of and their
ability to be weatherproofed properly. When designing our brackets, these secrets were
taken into consideration and that’s why we believe our accents are the best.
What are the secrets.
They’re really quite simple. When it comes to the material used, take a look at any old
barn. Often the paint is worn completely away and all that’s left is the raw wood. It gets
weathered and wind worn but it keeps lasting for years and years. What wood is it?
Pine. Here in southern Ontario, we manufacture our accents out of Ontario white pine.
It will last and last even if you don’t treat it but we recommend you do. After all, why
ask for troubles?
What about their ability to be weatherproofed? That’s in the design! There are many
designs out there that offer detailed lines and sharp interior corners. There’s a reason
that our designs don’t have either and it’s called paint. Ever try to get your paintbrush
into those intricate designs or sharp interior corners? It’s often impossible. If there’s no
paint, there’s no waterproofing and that leads to premature weathering. Yes, pine
weathers better than other woods but we decided to design our accents to last as long
as possible. To do that, they need to be easy to paint and there’s nothing wrong with
that!
Designs
Here are a few of the designs that are currently in stock and ready to accent your home.
Because they are produced by a template system, they are identical in every way. We
welcome requests for custom designs but please understand that template costs will be
incurred. Often design time is necessary to "adjust" the drawings (or should I say hen
scratching) that we receive.
Your best bet is to provide us with a preliminary sketch of your design including basic
measurements and material thickness. Tell us the quantity you will need and whether
or not you can provide a full size drawing or ¼" thick template. We will respond with
an estimate of the up front costs, suggestions where we may have to adjust the design
for it to be cut on our equipment and an estimated cost per piece. Then the decision to
proceed is up to you.

Spindles
Another way to accent your home is to install sections of spindles or "spandrels" as they are properly called. Here are four
basic designs currently in stock. From left to right, the first one, our largest, provides the
right scale on homes of larger stature. Recommended spacing this spindle is from 6" to
8". The second and third spindles are usually alternated in the same spandrel section.
Spacing for this traditional design is usually 4" to 6". The fourth and last spindle in this
selection is intended for interior or exterior use. Its short length is perfect for smaller
homes and being manufactured in oak adds lots of character with a stain and clear
finish.
